Ubuntu Network Dialogue Day 2
'Innovative Pedagogies for Development Education in Teacher Education'
Location - Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre, 27-31 Upper O'Connell Street, Dublin, 14th April 2008
Dialogue Day 2 focuses on innovative pedagogies that have potential to contribute to the integration of Development Education into teacher education programmes and practice in Ireland.
Teaching portfolios are used as a tool to support the process of reflection in teacher education, encouraging student teachers to think more deeply about their teaching and about subject matter content. The approach also facilitates students to become more conscious of the theories and assumptions that guide their practices, and provides a basis for collaborative dialogue about teaching.
Service learning, or community based learning encourages students to engage with communities (including charities, non-governmental organisations, statutory bodies, community associations or organisations with a focus on social responsibility) by active participation. Educators guide students through the process through structured reflection and the integration of theory and practice.
Dialogue Day 2 provides an opportunity to learn more about these pedagogical approaches, and in particular to explore how they are relevant to nurturing Development Education knowledge, skills and attitudes within teacher education. The workshops provide a space for dialogue and sharing of experience, while also challenging participants to identify how these approaches may be applied to their teaching and professional practice.
